1 really dumb question about how BB works

Rolling out several BB 8830's.

Have BES on and Exchange 2003 server.

If an existing user has 300Meg mail box and the BB only has 64 Megs of storage........it seems apparent that the user can't have access to all of his old emails, correct?

Does the BB actually store copies of each email on the handheld and could be quickly maxed out with several large email attachments (which is bad) or does it just show what's on the server like the exchange email web browser (which would make everyone happy)?

TIA

Attachments are not sent to the device by default, they are pulled down when requested to be viewed.

Also, there is a mail renention period, usually 30 days, in which older e-mail messages are not visable on the blackberryl

The BlackBerry does not store a copy of the mailbox. The BES deals with messages and PIM\Calendar entries on an individual level based on default system and user settings.

In basic terms it takes a copy of a message, strips out a lot of excess data like html or rich text formatting and encrypts and compresses a plain text version of it. It then truncates the message into 2kb chunks and sends the first 2k. If the user opens and reads a message it will request more from the server and the BES will then send further 2k chunks. Attachments are treated in a similar way.

When you activate a HH it will pre-populate a set number of days and\or number of messages and the last 30 days of calendar entries. It will sync the Notes, Tasks and Address Book to the respective handheld databases. It will NOT send the whole mailbox content. It will then process and send any new data the mailbox recieves, based on Global and User filters.

When the HH starts running low on space it will start removing older messages and calendar entries (default is keep last 30 days) or clearing the cache or other areas of memory (known as garbage collection).

Thank you!

We ordered 2gig storage upgrades for some of our BBs because we were worried that when those people were on working vacations, overseas for example, that after several emails with large attachments their BB would be full and they'd be wasting their time deleting emails that they might need a week later.

Anyone think I jumped the gun with that?
Is the default 64mg enough for most people?
We've disabled all the media and mp3 options.
They're just and email and phone devices now.

Another concern of mine (these are executives that are using them for the first time) is that they might demand that they can have access to 6 month old email from the first day they get their BB.
I have the BES screen in front of me but I can't see where to change the pre-populate settings to go back a few months during the initial activation like you mentioned.

Also I'm unable to find any info on how to make voice activation possible when the BB is in lockmode.
Is that even an option?

In a word YES!

The Micro SD slots are for storing media files and other files (a mass sotrage device essentially). The BB will not use it for storing message\calendar databases. If you have diabled all of these extra media options, the SD card will be useless.

64mb will be fine for most people. When the HH starts running low on memory, the low memory manager will kick in and reclaim space where it can.

Trust me, I have thousands of messages on my handheld going back over a month and I still have 7mb free, with over 50 photos stored on there as well.

cheers

1) What version of BES?

You can amend the pre-pop settings in later versions but only to a maximum. See the following KB-article:

If they want older email on their handheld after an activation have them resend them to themselves.

2) You need to set the "Allow Outgoing calls when locked" option to YES in the Security settings.
