1.5 stop bits???

I need to know more about a situation where you would use 1.5 stop bits. I could understand dividing bytes but how do you divide bits, does this have to do with subinterfaces?
note: this info.is worth one bonus point in my A+ cert. class so thank you very much in advance for any help.
