016 T/R Failing? 3

Hi Everyone,

We have a Merlin Magix with a 016 T/R board that seems to be giving us trouble. A few months back an extension completely lost a dial tone and could not send or receive calls. We switched it to a different port on the same board and it is now working OK. Now, we have two more extensions that are acting funny. I can call the extensions, and when the other party picks up, they can hear me but I can't hear them. They also have a dial tone, but they can't dial out.

Is this board just failing or could there be some other problem?

Any advice would be much appreciated!

Some additional info:

It appears that it's the top 4 ports on the module that are having the problem. The extension that was acting up a few months ago was using the 3rd port from the bottom, but all surrounding ports seem to be working OK.

When I say they can't dial out - they can hear the normal tone, but dialing an extension or dialing 9 to get out doesn't do anything. The tone continues. However after trying enough times I was able to complete an internal call as normal. Maybe 1 out of 10 times picking up and trying to dial out worked.

One of the extensions had two analog phones plugged into the same jack via a splitter. Could that have caused any problems?

Thanks again

I dont know the specific serial numbers off the top, but older post may have more details. Yes, you got a bad board, I've seen the top 4 go on dozens of boards. The lower 8 keep working ok, but the top (usually 13-16) go out, sometimes they have dialtone, but cant dial out, and often there is just no dialtone. Replace the board, or just mark them bad and use what you have left...

Re-Living the AT&T/Lucent/Avaya issues since 1979!

There is a known issue with some 016T/R boards for ports falling asleep. Avaya released a bulletin advising that the boards should be replaced.

I can't remember the specific details, but I think that merlinman and another user dagwoodsystems do.

If it ain't broke, I haven't fixed it yet.

Yeah, this has all the signs of a 617F34 016 T/R module. I'm sure that a search on 617F34 and dagwoodsystems would turn you one to one of a couple posts that I made on the topic.

There isn't much you can do here. If you keep the board and don't like playing "extension leapfrog", then avoid using the top and bottom four ports of that module (the innermost 8 don't seem to have the issue). This is an unfortunate waste of 8 ports, I know. But at least replacement isn't a requirement.

So if you DO buy another 016 blade, don't use it to replace the crippled board. Stick it in an unused slot to instead supplement your analog station count.

Doing a "reset" and "restore" of the 016 board in question through "maintenance" - will ususally bring most - if not all of the "sleepy" ports back to full functionality - for a while - but you will need to perform the reset/restore periodically. Or just go out and buy an "oldie but a goodie" (an 016 Legend module) - take it out of its ugly plastic case - remove the grey front piece off your Magix 016 - and put it on the Legend board - and install it in your Magix - and you'll "be happy for the rest of your life" - they rarely fail.

Tom,

If I do the reset/restore will that erase any sort of programming? Like extensions assigned to those ports? Do I need to do a backup or anything?

Thanks for the input.

The reset/restore is a maintenance function of the system and does not affect any programming or options. This is covered in the Maintenance document for the Legend version R6.0. Your backup feature should be on autopilot. You can make a backup copy to your PC.

As the other guys mentioned - you will not lose any programming by doing a reset/reestore. If you do replace the Magix 016 with a Legend 016 version - you will probably have to do a "board renumber" just to be sure the system fully recognizes the replaced module.
