I ran this by Merlinman earlier. I have an 016 ETR card with all 16 ports emitting a fast ticking sound, about 2 clicks per second. I see no errors for that slot in the error log. I set the last 6 ETR prts to SLT. Before I order a repacement does it sound like a bad card?

Before replacing it, I would try 1) Busy it Out 2) remove and reseat it, and then 3) Restore it to see if that changes anything.

It's not the only card in that carrier is it?

If it is the only card in that carrier it could also be the power supply gone bad.

The carrier is fully populated. I have the CPU, 008, 024, DS 100, 016 and a MM.

Then I would rule out the power supply unless other modules are having issues. I would do what merlinman suggested and power the system down, pull the card out, put it back in so that you know it is seated properly, then power the system back up. If it still happens after that, it is probably a bad 016 card.

The soluton makes no sense. So I was swapping things in and out and in the process used a 2 pair patch cord from port to modem. Problem gone. Put the one pair back on, problem returns. Make a new 1 pair - problem persists. Replace again with 2 pair - problem gone. I simply have no idea what's going on but it works and I am relieved.

What kind of plugs on the patch cords? I've had 6-pin, 2-pair modular connecting cords that wouldn't seat properly, and had either Tip or Ring touching the data pair of the station port, causing the ticking noise. A regular 8-pin connecting cord seated properly, eliminating the problem.

Hmmmm ... I used 4 position plugs. I know once I bent some pins by using a 4 pos in an 8 pos jack. I also know these plugs fit super tight in my crimper. I need to use a screwdriver to push them back out. I'll get in there with a flashlight next time I visit the place.

That is the problem with cheap and poorly designed and/or out of tolerance modular plugs. Probably from China! I only use AMP modular plugs and tool dies. They make all the varieties for various cable types.

These are Allen-Tel. I don't buy CCC.
