Hey Nortel experts,

Any reason why the original M Series Nortel phones had a "QZ" labeled on the 0 button? Most modern alpha numeric dialing integrates the Q into 7 while Z is in 9 on the dialpad.

Thanks,

Joe

Until the 90s, there were no standard for the layout of letters on the keypad. Nortel (at that time, Northern Telecom) chose to put the letters Q and Z on the 0 button. The sets produced until then reflect that choice.

When the standard came, letters Q and Z were moved to the 7 and 9 buttons respectively. Also, starting with CICS and MICS 4.1, the software allows to chose either configuration (called non-CCITT and CCITT) to enter names in programming. The setting also applies to Automated Attendants, when callers access the company directory.
