Originally my computer crashed and I was getting the above message. I was instructed to use this set of commands:

ren c:\windows\system32\config\software software.old
copy c:\windows\repair\software c:\windows\system32\config

to restore my PC but I was made aware that I my need to reinstall all my applications which I did.

My computer is better now however now I'm having problems connecting to certan websites. Some tell me I need Active-X?! Others time i get a message the says my security settings wontt allow me to view this sight. Other time I click on a link and another internet explorer window opens and nothing loads. The screen stays white. Also everytime I try to save a website as a favorite I get a message that reads something like:
“ Cant not save the file " Website name" Catastropic failure.

Im sure all this has to with my system crashing a few weeks ago when I had to recover by using the commands mentioned above, but maybe like all my applications do my internet settings have to be that be reset ??

Thanks in advance.

Sounds like you've got some sort of infection on your hands - possibly a botched infection... maybe one that got damaged with your efforts so far, so is only partially working correctly... or just badly programmed.

At this point, I'd highly recommend this path:
1. Back-up any important data if not done already
2. If you don't have a router, get one.
3. - run Active KillDisk or DBAN and wipe the drive.
4. Reinstall Windows
5. Get Windows up to date - SP3, any security updates, at the least.
6. Make sure drivers are all installed/up to date.
7. Install a good Antivirus - My #1 pick, Avira Antivir.
8. Install a few good antimalware apps - Malwarebytes Antimalware, Super Antispyware FREE Edition, SpywareBlaster
9. Install and run a clean-up utility or even a few - RegScrubXP, Advanced System Care, Glary Utilities, CCleaner - run any of these that you install.
10. Install a good firewall - best right now is probably Comodo Internet Security - download, install, let run for a while - a day or two, probably -, then you can probably turn off the AV protection portion (has fair # of false positives - much higher than Avira, and isn't terribly great anyway), and set the Defense or Firewall settings to "Clean PC Mode" - there are 3 settings you can configure... Antivirus, Firewall, and System Defense, something like that... they're all in the right-click context menu from the system tray icon.
11. Monitor your system for a couple of days, at least... if no issues, then it's fixed, and hopefully now you're better protected..

All the above programs can be downloaded at except for RegScrubXP, which can be downloaded at direct link on the name in the list above.

Post back with your progress..

Some other things you can look at too.

How do I restore security settings to the default settings?

Try Safe Mode with Networking (Do you have this problem in Safe Mode?).

Try running ChkDsk to check your drive for errors. Right-click your Drive icon/ Properties/ Tools/ Error Checking. Select both boxes.

Run the System File Checker program from the Run Box by typing.....Sfc /Scannow in it and have your XP CD handy.

Do you have these problems in you test with a different user?
