I've looked around quite a bit and there seems to be no way of calling a userdefined function at table level to specify a default value for a field. I have a function to create my own autonumber field but since I can't call it from table level and I don't want a form or a query, it appears to be useless. Any ideas? I'm using Access 97.

As far as I know, it's not possible to call a user-defined function at the table level.
If you do a search on the Microsoft site, the only example they give is by using a form. Whether this means it's not possible I don't know but having tried it myself without success I think you're out of luck. However, I'm no guru and there may well be someone out there who knows of a way to do it.
Just out of curiosity, why not create a form for this?
