Basically I went to this folder "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\web server extensions" and made a new folder within it. I then changed the install directory to the new folder. I did not have compression on so that was one less issue...

It is a successful story!! I have got the intranet working on http://domain/ (default) and NOW have sharePoint working at http://domain:8000/
Is it possible to have sharepoint running under your default intranet site, E.I http://domain/ = takes you to the default intranet site (index.htm). Then have a link to your sharepoint, and have all this running on one sever (2003) sp1.

I had the same problem! PSU was the answer for me. Tried a different psu in the machine and it worked ok swapped it back and it did it again. VERY strange I know!
