Actually, I've usually had the *opposite* problem. Systems
insisting on powering off a monitor, even when I wanna look at da
pwetty pictures.
try 'man xset'. something like 'xset s on' or 'xset s blank' or 'xset dpms' might work.
Coupla other things to keep in mind.
routing is obviously important.
resolving can be just as critical. two other files you'll need to look
at are /etc/resolv.conf and /etc/nsswitch.conf. resolv.conf tells your
system what dns servers to use. most *basic* format is:
nameserver 111.222.333.444...
