i had the same issue before , it was due to an insufficiant power supply ( 300 W ) , so check that, it may solve your problem , via chipset may be also a problem

yes , i've already heard of the nvram, but i'm quite surprised that it may affect fans.. and the reset of the settings of your computer won't affect your data on your hard disk, but affect what you could have do to the bios

everything said above is exactly what we did , we moved a national company and we did exactly as above. the only point i want you to pay attention, is the hard disk. they love getting down with moving ;) so just make sure they won't be too hardly shaken ;)

If a virus erase your bios , the last way of saving it, will be to change the bios chip itself, it's not very difficult to do, but depending on your motherboard it could cost you a lot

maybe you can use a knoppix distribution, it may be useful for saving your data ( if not considering burning, or try knoppix copy to ram)
