So, for example, you get to the Internet using BellSouth DSL, and you have BS's outgoing smtp server as the outgoing mail server. It does not matter the domain of your email address. What matters is who you are using to connect to the Internet.
There might be an elegant workaround to this, but that is the situation I am in with my laptop. I just change the outgoing server as needed.
