In addition to the above make sure your mtu is set at 1492 max (the optimum is probably lower). You can learn more about the mtu settings at http://www.dslreports.com/faq/5793.
I believe when I first signed up for verizon dsl, I had the same exact problem and it was resolved by lowering the mtu...
