You could have a hostname resolution problem or a network issue. CDE is very sensitive to such things and could cause the problem you are seeing. If you can get to a login prompt run the comand "set_parms initial" and answer the questions. You may have to boot to single user mode...
Go through your /var/adm/messages files and see if you can find where the system crashes. You can search for words like fatal, panic, or error to help locate the panic string. If that fails, most reboots contain the string "Solaris 5.8" or something. Look for whats called the panic...

I know this is a very delayed post, but if you are still looking (and have probably noticed that HP does not offer hardware training) my company does offer HP 9000 hardware training. The class covers workstations and servers and some admin skills (loading OS, diags, etc). The class is not held...
During boot up the first thing a B class system does is ask if you want to change monitor resolution. This is done by pressing the TAB key within 15 seconds after the system first outputs to the screen. Of course if you cannot read the display this doesnt help. What you can do is power the...
On HPUX 10.xx and up the ioscan command (use "ioscan -fnC tape") will report the model number of the tape drive (35480A, C1533A, etc). If need be you can then use HP-SPI or Partsurfer to determine the type of drive that it is.
