I had the same problem w/ my 160 GB external drive. The problem was kicking my ass. Turns out I had the Norton Recycle Protection enabled my laptop and wasn't aware. My desktop was oblivious and didn't care. Once I purged the files on my laptop, all was fine.

Try this:
Go into Tools | Options | Checking Mail
Set Secure Sockets when receiving to If Available. If that's what it's set @ now, set it to never.
You can do the same thing to the Sending Mail options.
Let me know if that doesn't help.
If I understand you correctly, you would like to disable the visual aspect of the error, right?
Go to Tools | Options | Background Tasks
Uncheck the box for bring error to window front. You will still, however, still get the error sound.
