I had the same problem. My memory stick was a Sony Memory Stick "PRO" and the reader didn't recognize it. It would read some times but never write.

Usually when you start them up from a cold start, they automatically degauss themselves. If they don't do that, then Radio Shack has cheap degaussing coils that will correct it. Follow directions carefully that comes with the degaussing coil.
Of course, if you had a 19" LCD monitor they don't...
Mine computer just started that the other day. I can't access either of the two (2) CD drives. One is a Sony DVD and the other is a Sony CD. When booting, the BIOS sees both the CD drives, but then Windows XP/Home will not see them.
