    How to make layers transparent?

    Hi, i'm just a beginner working with Adobe Photoshop 5.5. I try to make layers transparent, so that i can see a part of the background through the layers. I tried it with the gradient tool, but it ddidn't work like i wanted. Who can help me? Thanks in advance Bunny32
