so mission successfully accomplished!
Thanks to your help and advice I managed to reinstall the Execution Environment as you mentioned it and the man pages work just fine. without that hint I probably would have never found the right file and installing everything again is no fun...
I did try the Software Manager but (of course) didn't know to look for the IRIX Eecution Environment. I will try your hint asap and keep you up-dated.

thanks so much for (at last) your answer. I did check the installation disks being aware that the man pages should be there somewhere. However I couldn't find ana package which indicated these pages. Do you have by chance any idea which one I have to reinstall?

on our INDY with IRIX 6.2 are the man pages missing.
-Where do I find the man database? Internet? IRIX 6.2 Installation CD-ROMS? I try to avoid re-installing 6.2
- Let's assume I have the database, how do I install it?
