Mitchatwrk, spot on mate!
Unchecking the "Enable Third Party Browser Extensions" setting got the browser working. I then downloaded the BHOcop software. Sure enough winshow.dll was there.

Hey mitchatwrk - can you please enlarge on your comment "It's fixed, goddam adware". I get exactly the same problem which has moved from being intermittent to a hard fault i.e. IE wont work at all. What did you find to be the cause and how did you fix it?
