My pentium 3 with windows XP home on it is currently holding hostage a number of files of high importance, among them my unfinished exam paper. I can't access the files because after problems I had to use another drive as master and my acount on the previous master was password protected.

I went to the boot menu and it said that indeed the CPU temperature was too high. the thing was running normally and everything, I didn't know why but I adjusted the hard drive a litle closer and that has worked. thanks everyone for your help.
about every two minutes there comes from my windows 98 computer an incredibly long tone. Does this mean anything?
stupid question probably, please answer anyway. ;)
I am very sure it can read DVD's, the plus minus thing remains a mystery, she has no idea.
I guess I will have to learn to live with the fact that it's acting weird with this particular cd-rom.
Thank you all for your sugestions.
I found the box of the burning device, it says "DVD+R and +RW CD-rewriter" It can be used to burn DVD's, but I don't think I actually burned something that can be read with a DVD player, the burner could do both, but I put 4,5 Gb's worth of video files on it in what I think must have been data mode.
I used a DVD-burning device to produce a DVD for a friend, but when she puts it in the drive of her laptop it acts as if there is nothing in it, it doesn't act like the DVD is empty, but as if there is no DVD at all. It does work with other CD-roms. Does anyone know what could be the problem?
after adding the C drive of a computer with a broken down motherboard to another computer as to still be able to use the files on it, I can't get into the folder I need in the 'documents and settings' department. When I try to open it I get a message saying the folder is not accessible, access...
this problem has been solved, thanks everyone for your help. [medal]
now I have a different problem, I can't access my old files anymore and it looks like the folder that should contain them is empty.
In other words: oh crap. [evil]
after not being able to start up my computer with my C drive as master, I reinstalled windows XP on my D drive today. every important file I have was on the C drive that wasn't working, and that I installed as a slave after reinstalling XP, wanting to get the files off it before reinstalling XP...
well that didn't work, what did work was replacing the video card, so I've got a visual now, only we're not halfway done, I gotta install a different drive as master. gonna do that now...
clearing the bios didn't work, removing the video card did, I've got a visual now and I'm trying to reinstall XP on the D drive, as not to lose the inportant stuff on the C, where the problem probably is. I think micker is right that I deleted too much, as soon as I get in I'm going to first get...
Island custom, the answer to both questions is yes, it seems to work just as it should, only every 15 seconds it does that again, and again, and again untill I cut the power.
JDEO24, thanks. I'll try it as soon as I get someone with me to make sure I don't screw it up and unplug the wrong thing.
after starting my other computer (the one with all the important files, that's right) [sadeyes] the screen never displays anything and therefor I cannot even get to the bios option screen which I apparently need to get to to get rid of the rest of the computer problems. [upsidedown] >:-<...
moreover, the monitor has stopped displaying anything other than "no sync imput"
I'm using a computer at school now, but I really need the thing at home. I might annoy you cuz I don't know much of this stuff, but any help will is greatly appreciated.
I've been away for a few days and others have probably been using it. it was acting weird when I came home today and it contained a few programs and activity I didn't recognize. I thought of a virus and tried to deinstall the weird programs called 'hotfix XP', of which there were 10 all at once...
