I have a PC with a 40G drive and a 160G drive, with multiple OS installations (one Win-98, 1 XP-Home on one drive, on XP-Pro on the other drive) and some empty partition space. The machine also has many years of crud accumulated.
I want to wipe out / re-format both drives (after backing up...
My Dell Dimension 4400 dies regularly and silently after some time (between a day and 2-3 days). It has never done this while I am using it (it is mostly in a closet). But when I come back to it I often find it completely unresponsive to mouse or keyboard, & have to power-cycle (no reset button...
I frequently run scripts to automate tasks on my PC (running XP). e.g. some of these scripts open up MS Word and automatically create some Word documents.
Unfortunately, McAfee always stops these scripts with a pop-up that says "A Suspicious Script Has Been Detected".
How do I turn this off...
Is it possible to add a multi-line custom property field?
I would like to add "documentation" fields to shapes that represent software objects (like classes, packages, etc.)
I would like the user to be able to enter multiple lines of text into these fields.
When I select a "String" custom...
Outlook 2003 (just internet mail, no Exchange).
I recently moved a bunch of older stuff out of my main outlook.pst file into an archive. I also have a couple of other older .pst files.
I just noticed that my Mail Folder list now has my top-level Personal Folders (as it always has), and below...
XP-Pro, SP-1.
I have the taskbar on the bottom, locked, always above other windows.
When I am resizing another window by its LOWER-RIGHT corner, the mouse and window edge both slide past (and BEHIND) the taskbar. This does not happen when resizing by the bottom edge, or lower-left corner...
Thanks, JockMullin.
I did not even know there was a "cmd", having always used "command". Looks like "cmd" even has filename completion.
Oooooh. Why didn't I ask this question a year ago!
Thanks again.
OK, I must be totally dumb.
I'm using the standard built-in "command" line.
I type in:
cd "C:\Program Files"
and I get
Parameter format not correct.
I try all kinds of other combinations, no luck.
How does this work?
Is there any filename completion thingie available?
Thanks.
I find this helpctr.exe process consuming lots of CPU and want to turn it off.
Also msmsgs.exe keeps putting itself into my startup list.
(New XP install, no infection).
How can I disable these two?
Thanks!
I use the "Flag Status" field in Outlook 2003.
I want to move it's position in the current view: from the right-end column to the left-end.
I am able to do this for almost any other field by:
View-Arrange By-Current View-Customize
But I CANNOT make it work for the FlagStatus field.
Any...
I have an entry "Green Thumb" in Outlook 2003 Contacts. No exchange server.
When I search for "Green" nothing shows up. In fact it does not even show up in the search listing.
But when I switch to the "Contact" view and select "G", there it is.
And when I use my external search/indexing...
When I try to set Clear Type (control panel, display, appearance, effects) the fonts on my LCD screen get blurred.
The jagged edges are improved, but the characters are more blurred than they should be.
I recall seeing somewhere that there are some tweaks to take care of this by adjusting some...
Outlook 2000 allowed me to set up an account which was _not_ automatically included in send/receive (without using Exchange).
I used this to send (legitimate) email from another account.
But I don't want that account to be automatically checked with each send/receive cycle.
How can I do this...

I am really frustrated trying to do any shell things on 2000 or XP. The two biggest frustrations are:
- file/directory names with spaces: never seem to be able to consistently type them in acceptably (quotes? single? double?)
- command or filename completion
Are there any ways to improve the...
I use NETBIOS for computer names on a SOHO LAN. I know the IP address range, and set it up as "TRUSTED" zone in Zone Alarm. This particular machine is running Win98.
But ZoneAlarm still insists on blocking NETBIOS, with the result I cannot see any computer names from the LAN.
If I...
