I had a similar problem that went from "Excel has caused a fatal error" to "Excel has caused an illegal operation" and then with alt ctl del got your message "system has run low on resources...would you like to close excel"

rmarcus my problem has extended. Text to columns was Ok when there were equal numbers of given names before the surname. But how or can I use test to columns when there may be from one or two or three etc given names. The text to columns separates all given names (using the space as a delimter)...
Can anyrone tell me how to separate the last name from a set of names in a column. I need to take the last name of and shift it into the next column. Ie extract the surname from the given names. the only delimiter I have is the space between the names.
I will soon be administering a new data base holding Birth, Death & Marriage registration information for the Govt of Western Australia.
The current data base holds uniocode characters in the Person's names fields and Places fields.
Crystal Reports doesn't allow for unicode.
