I'm sure that i have heard is you move all the data to the begining of the drive (with defrag or else) that fdisk can be used to resize the original partition and create a new one at the end of the disk.
Can someone confirm or deny this as it is just my spotted memory

OK say you use partition magic to create a single windows partition that doesn't take up the full harddrive, and install XP to it, when you install redhat isn't there an option to create the linux...
I remember using a program called Pheonix (or perhaps the company name pheonix) to restore completely restore a formatted ntfs partition, sorry not many details but i hope it helps,..

Check your BIOS most new MB have a "Wake on LAN (or ethernet, whatever!)" function, and your internet connection may use an ethernet port? so any activity on your connection could possibly wake the computer up...
