I have seen and done myself where you install DNS as a root server. What this means is your DNS server believes that it is the ultimate athority for all DNS requests. If it doesn't know the answer then it thinks it doesn't exist. You can check for this by find a single dot in your DNS console...
It sounds alot like you may have been hacked. Many times hackers will change bin files so they log your user name and password. doing this causes odd things to happen.
Another option could be your profile. Have you tried loging in as another user?
I need to restore files that have been deleted using the recycle bin on a windows 2000 pro machine. I have tested every software I could find and none could pass this simple test.
1. create a file on drive D
2. reboot machine
3. verify file still exists then delete file and remove from recycle...
