Thanks for the input.
I just took the 6.5 class 3 weeks ago and with all the advanced disk options and all the other new disk options in general, I could see doing our own in house DSU attached to the SAN. I spoke to the boos about it today and he is open to any ideas still, as long as they...
To better understand the situation I have reworded things a bit, I appreciate all the answers so far.
Current Environment:
NetBackup 6.0 MP4
Master – HPUX 11.i
3 Media – HPUX 11.i
L700 w/ 10 LTO3 (fiber) direct attached to media servers
NDMP
Near Future:
NetBackup 6.5.x
Master – HPUX Itanium...
Thx for the replies.
So far it looks as though the bossman has narrowed it down to EMC VTL w/ Dedupe, NetApp, and Sun/STK VTL. Personally I liked the idea of Netapps appliance. The use the OSO api w/ NetBackup. If I had my way I would pick a DSU vs a VTL, but in the end I don't make the...
We are shopping around for a VTL or DSU. Just wanted to get an idea of what some of you are using, why you picked the product your using, and are you satisfied with it.
Our environment is:
-NetBackup 6.0 MP4 -> we will be upgrading to 6.5.2A after the new year
-1 Master, 3 media servers all...
You could call Symantec or your reseller and get a temp license key that would last a month if you didn't have your real key handy. If you use the Symantec licensing portal, you can look up your keys at anytime. One thing we did is just export the keys from NetBackup and email them in an...

The Media Server used for these SAN transfers is referred to as a Fibre Transport Media Server because of the Fibre Transport services which are used to present Target Devices on a SAN. Only...
We upgraded last year from 5.1 to 6.0 MP4 and compression on our catalog didn't make a difference in the upgrade, granted ours is only 50gig.
The biggest peace of advice I have is if you have Tech Support w/ Symantec use them. I called before the upgrade and told them that we were upgrading...
Found my answer, looks as though its a feature(bug) of MP4 and lower.

Incremental True Image Restore (TIR) backups run as Full backups on every folder except the first folder listed in the policy. This occurs when the...
We are testing synthetic backups on a server. We have the full/diff incremental/ and synthetic full in the schedule. We have TIR checked with move detection. My question is, should the incrementals be larger in size than our previously non TIR'd backups. Last night the incremental was at...
Just taking a wild guess, I've never done this.
Could you use SSO license and assign the drives/disk from one of the other locations to the one doing the backup. Just create a new storage unit assigned to the media server doing the backup and with SSO, shouldn't it be able to control the other...
I too am getting high CPU loads from NBSL. We run NB Master on HP-UX 11.i system. It is sometimes soo bad that we are 100% cpu load for hours. Please if anyone has any ideas on this issue let us know.

When backing up Oracle using Netbackup scripts an error 6 is usually produced by a syntax error within the script being called during backup.
Also make sure the...
I'm a bonehead as usual and overcomplicated things. I created 2 test policies, set to the same storage unit and MPX. Manual release and it worked. Yahoo - I'm now doing it on multiple policies and it has really helped free up drives.
We are currently starting to use multiplexing because we have replaced our LTO1s with LTO3s. I have a policy with multiple clients and the multiplexing is set and works great.
My question:
Can multiplexing be done with different policies going to the same tape?
Example:
unix_db_oracle_a...
We have actually stopped doing mailbox backups. The load on the media servers (I/O) was too much and not to mention the shoe shining on the drives because of the incredibly slow throughput. We just do the Information Stores and do our restores to the recovery group.
If you have to do mailbox...
Does a NAS backup using NDMP use take up less catalog space than say a normal (non-ndmp)bkup would? I ask this because I was poking around and it hit me that in the activity monitor for NDMP backup it always shows only 1 file being backed up. Since the catalog images are based on number of...
I read the support doc and I don't think that is what we are looking for. That seems to be just the command line way of switching/adding media to the catalog/netbackup pool, instead of through the Gui. This still looks as though I would have to specify and change the media added/deleted...
My boss wants me to post and see if there is a setting in NetBackup that can be changed so that we can allocate more than 2 devices/tapes in the catalog settings at a time. We are running 5.1 on HP-UX. I have never seen such a setting/parameter, if there is one, can someone please enlighten me...
We are upgrading the hardware of one of our HP-UX servers and the DLT7000 drives attached to the current hardware cannot be used on the new hardware platform. The old box is staying as as a media server but being renamed.
Current name "hpsis" - New name wil be "oldsis"
Would it be easier to...
Can anybody using these resources help?
We are budgeting for next years upgrade and we have to decide if we want to go with a VTL or just raw disk for D2D(2T). What are the advantages/disadvantages to either or both.
Some that we already know of is that Disk Storage requires managment of the...
