Okay thanks anyway. The problem is indeed not with MySQL but with windows. Windows ODBC Datasource administrator traces all ODBC calls in a sql.log file, in this case the MySQL ODBC connection.

I've installed MySQL on Suse Linux 8.1 professional to run with php etc. but when starting phpmyadmin I get the error that it can't connect through the mysql socket. i checked, the socket is present and as far as I can tell mysql has rights to access it.
Ideas, anyone?
