    how to check type and status of service running on a host eg. FTP,SMTP

    hello everyone, i'm new to SNMP. i want to know is there any simple method to know the type and status of service running on a host, such as FTP, SMTP? Can i use ping to do this? if it can't, how can i do this by snmp? please help! Thanks advance, william
