Yes you can make any drive you buy a primary (master drive).
And this does smell like a dying drive and needs to be taken out and retired.. Maybe some nice wind chimes made out of the platters..
This reeks of a XP software issue, not a hardware problem.. Check to see what mode the IDE controller in XP is set at (control panel/system/hardware/device manager/ide devices/) I bet that XP thinks that the drive is a PIO mode drive and the light is staying on for that reason..
I had a 100 gig WD1000BB fail on me three months out of the box. TARE and track 0 faults. Fortunately, I had a copy of a drive recovery program and was able to dig myself out of that hole and WD was quite willing to exchange for me a WD1000DB model.. The drive with the 8 meg cache!
