    Thanks--I should have said that this is a completely new install so I don't have an operating system on it at all. ng the brand new cable that came with the drive and I'm assuming its good. The power cable is working fine.

    BEAUTIFUL!!!!!! Thanks for the idea. Everything is up and running. I put the modem in bridge mode and let XP set the network and dsl connection without using the Linksys setup. Working fine (crossing fingers).
