Many Thanks - luckily I did not need it. Today, Windows ME came up as normal (after I had downloaded a Boot Disk, etc.). It did not do that yesterday. I told my daughter to just let it run until she went to bed and that was all. Apparently it healed itself and the software that I installed...
My son-in-law's Dell pc will not start Windows ME - I get 'WINDOWS could not upgrade the file %1 from %2 %1: %2' continously. I had just installed software that comes with the FUGI FinePix camera and a USB cable. Several pieces of software were also installed (QuickTime, etc. Can't remember them...
I may be wrong but 'low-level format' should probably NOT BE USED. I do not know th e purpose but I believe it is VERY dangerous and can make your hard drive unusable. Perhaps some of the other viewers can help out here. Best of Luck. Sometimes we just don't know what we don't know
I would think you should have a report showing all of your CMOS Settings, just in case you ever have to set them manually. Failing the report, do screen prints and save them. I believe you can find utilities (free shareware) on the Web that can deliver the report, by searching for them.I also...
Have you looked at your OS Tools for a utility such as Disk Cleanup? It may be that this will delete the unnecessary files. Check out your HELP to see what tool(s) you have available. It depends on the version of your OS.
HOPE THIS HELPS Sometimes we just don't know what we don't know
Do a search for a thread for your BSOD - there is one thread that has over 200 replies for this problem which should help you out - it did me. You'll see that there are several possible causes for your problem. Sometimes we just don't know what we don't know
You may have to check the jumper settings on the motherboard also, if you set a password up with the BIOS and it still doesn't require the password at bootup time.
Check the motherboard documentation (now that will be fun). Sometimes we just don't know what we don't know
With the AMD K6 it probably is heat-related. Find the thread mentioned above and you'll see a lot of AMD K-6 problems caused by heat buildup. Clean out your PC using compressed air, make sure fan is clean and running.
Good Luck. Sometimes we just don't know what we don't know
Have you tried running MSCONFIG and unchecking the line in the autoexec.bat that causes IE to try and start? That is better than trying to remark out the line yourself. Leave the line in and use MSCONFIG. Good Luck. Sometimes we just don't know what we don't know
Are there any .psw files you could rename to check to see if their absence would negate the requirement for entering the password. Sometimes we just don't know what we don't know
You need EXPLORER but nothing else to use your PC. Everything else can be stopped with MSCONFIG. I did that in order to eliminate some BSOD and .vxd problems that I was having. I also killed Power Management and ran a batch VXD 'fix', and stopped my Virus Checker (Macafee). Overkill perhaps but...
