Utilities <chkdsk,dfrag etc> wil not go on forever if you do make partitions. Partitions could also make backups easier as you would be backing up smaller chunks. I broke mine up as the above user suggested and usit as suggeseted. diff partitions for diff type stuff.
Problem still not solved, but I know how to work around it. Since it does not seem to have a simple answer a;nd i have a work around, it is not low priority . I'll see what it does and report back cdogg.
Turn off FAST-BOOT or something like that, so that you can see the memory count, and drive detection... QUICK POWER ON was disabled..I enabled it to see if there was an efffect-but no changes. no memory count, did see drive detection and IRQ settings.
I don't like to use cable select (CS)...

I have the 180gig + 20gig on one ribbon and this cable combination does not change and is not the problem (as far as i know!).

electronicsfreak - its kind of crowded in the case, but i took a light and looked at everything that i could find and didn't see any discolored or enlarged parts. The board is about one yr old.

After reading more posts, I checked my IDE cables and they have a notch, so they are correct. The Bios reads Floppy, CD-ROM, HDD.

if i attempt to boot from an Ultimate CD boot, i get "ERROR BOOTING FROM CD/DVD DRIVE. PRESS ANY KEY..... " and on the bottom of the screen I get error msg...
