Well, the ERD has changed just a bit again in Win2k3. If you launch the Backup Applet (Start->Programs-> System Tools->Backup) you need to hit the blue highlighted link to go to Advanced Mode.
Once there, you're going to be interested in the ASR backup (Automated System Recovery). It's...
Joe,
Building another machine and naming it the same won't resolve the problem because of the issue that the names are there for us 'stupid humans'. Either GUID or SID is the identifier. The job is to remove the SID of the old NT machine from wherever it is.
Likely, you will have to fire up...
This CAN be caused by a Kerberos Key Distribution Center service that is not running or is dsiabled. Check Services to determine if the KDC is, in fact running.
Refer here for more info on this common (and sometimes very hard to resolve) issue...
You'll want to use the switch on the Exchange setup.exe, as follows:
setup /disasterrecovery

Your status code of 3 passed with the Flag of 17 indicated "Path or file not found".
Typically, this is caused by a program that was installed, which creates user accounts and assigns rights to those user accounts. Later, the program was removed, the user accounts deleted, but the...
Once they have initiated the VPN connection, are they authenticated to the domain? Yes, I saw the cached credentials statement, but are they able to execute a 'net use z: \\<server>\<share> to get to resources once connected?
If so, though not an ideal solution, you can give them a local...
Can you determine if the Everyone group still has the Print permission granted?
Are you the only affected security principal?

To allow users to modify files INSIDE a folder while not being able to delete the folder itself, give the principals permissions to R,W,Mod (all but FC)to the files IN the folder. Permissions on the folder itslf, however, should be RO for those same principals.

When you connect via the VPN, do an IPConfig. What DNS server are you pointed at? If it's NOT the DNS at your target environment, you will not be able to ping by name as there is nothing to resolve the names at your traget.
Configure the VPN server to hand out more than just an IP address -...
Re-read the event log - is that an error or warning? Also, I (we) would need to have the exact message from the event log, as there are a number of causes. It can be resolved with the event log information.
I suspect that it can be self-resolved by a read of this article...
Matt, Bill -
Likely going to need to at least be aware of the potential for needing GRE with PPTP and the necessity of allowing AH and ESP (AH - authentication protocol, ESP - encrytption protocol) for IPSec, in addition to the UDP IKE (Internet Key Exchange) port 500 that you mentioned.
GRE...

Yes, he needs forwarders. I'm not arguing that, and...
Check WINS and it's functionality. NetGetDCName is a NetBIOS function to pull a 1B record (Master Browser record). NetGetAnyDcName is the function called when resolving a 1C record (used to find a DC for pass-through auth).
You've got Win98, which isn't exactly known for it's stellar IETF...
Bill,
What model Cisco router is this? You should be able to NAT through the router, eliminating the need for the two NICs, ICS, the whole thing.
This is a matter of KISS, if you know what I mean. Let the DC be the DC, DNS, DHCP, and WINS (if necessary) but bag the ICS, routing and NAT...
Do what PSS (Microsoft Product Support Services) would tell you to do:
Go to Start -> Programs -> Administrative Tools -> Services and find the License Server.
Access the properties by right-clicking, select Disable from the Pulldown.
Stop the service.
That should resolve it. The license...

Pointing the forwarders to the external NIC are pointless. Forwarders are only for DNS resolution when my DNS can't answer the question. Thus, it needs to point to his IPS's DNS, not his external interface.
He needs ICS, because as unpleasant as it may be, this is the machine that is...
Not a DNS issue. This is an issue that is related to machine passwords for the machine accounts. A restart (as suggested) of both machines may resolve it, as will using NETDOM (from the Support Tools on the Windows 2k CD) to force a reset and synch of the machine account passowords.
HTH...
Most likely reason is that either there is a stale or unused WINS or DNS record that is still intact on one of the name servers, or you may just simply need to clear your name cache.
Try ipconfig /flushdns
I would guess if you ping the computer in question (10.30.1.6) by IP addr. it pings...
Bill,
Let me see if I have this straight - you are using the DNS of your ISP for your AD DNS? If not, where is your DNS for Active Directory? I don't see it listed above, and you'll need to point this at the server that has DNS - the DNS that has the records that were created when you...
