I've been assigned the task (at my work) of switching our Windows servers over to Linux servers (due to overwheelming M$ costs). I am using RedHat beacuse I am most comfortable with it. I have already done the fileserver successfully and will be doing the mailserver shortly.
What I am after...
I have been asked to assist with setting up a RedHat server at my work because of my Linux background. I am relatively good, however I have never done any work with Networking and Servers. I have a couple of questions:
1. What is a good partition set-up for a server (Any links to websites...
Thanks all for your input. I was very interested in your opinions and also have more respect for AMD. I am very pleased with their processors and will be using them on my new PC's for a small home network.
Samson.
I have always been told that pentiums are better than AMD, and always used pentium processors myself.
I have read heaps of documentation that puts AMD down saying that their processors run hot and have a low fault tolerance.
However, I just started getting more into building computer, etc...
I have done some mods to my PC, but haven't hooked all the fans up (as I don't think my power supply will hold up).
My current power supply is a CODEGEN 300w. I want some suggestions as to what power supply I should use to power the following:
2 x HDDs
2 x CDROM/CDRW

4 x Case Fan...
I have heard that disabling the Prefetch can be beneficial. I usually delete the files in C:\Windows\Prefetch monthly and there is a lot of obselete entries.
I can't see any real benefit of having a Prefetch to start off with. Is it worth disabling or should I leave it alone?
Thanks All...
I would like to know how to set up temperature monitors for my Hard disks and CPU.
I am revamping my case and it would be good to have some temperature monitoring. By this I mean so software such as gkrellm can read the CPU and hard disk temperatures.
Any help or pointers to some websites...
For a single user PC, is it a good idea to have a Admin account and another resticted account for yourself (like it is usually set up in Linux)? Will this make it less likely to get Viruses, trojans, etc.
I am a little confused with the computer power supply. My current supply (300W) has all the power outlets taken up. This is only used to power my two hard drives and two CD-ROMs.
I recently got a thermaltake crystal orb (video card chipset fan), and I had to run it from a case fan plug on...
Thanks all (esp bcaster). Geoshell will be a last resort.
When I get home from work I will have another crack at it.
I'll keep you all posted.
the1bigboy, where do you find explorer in msconfig? I never thought it was there...
My sister's brought her laptop to me with a few problems. It seems to boot up okay, however once Windows has loaded, there is no taskbar nor desktop.
Fortunately, I can CTRL+ALT+DELETE and execute explorer and open windows explorer. I am going to install a AVG antivirus to run a virus scan...

http://www.asus.com/prog/spec.asp?m=P4S333-C&langs=01
The motherboard has a 400MHz FSB. Processors with a 400MHz FSB are hard to get and I would like to get a 2.4GHz 533FSB CPU...
I would like to know if it is possible to share a Dial-up internet connection between Windows98 and WindowXP. My brother uses Win98, I use WinXP and everytime he wants to use the internet I have to disconnect and let him dial up, and vice versa.
