How to change DateEdited in form to current date

I am trying to change the DateEdited field to the current date when any data changes in the record. The property in the form for the field has an input mask 99/99/000;0;_ and AfterUpdate is =Now(). The table Default for this field is the same. It isn't working. Any help?

    A message appeared Increase MaxLocksPerFile

I tried to split my rather large table into related tables for a better running program, but the message I got said that "sharing lock count exceeded" and I needed to "Increase MaxLocksPerFile in the Registry Entry". Does anyone know what this is and where to increase it?

    Break one table into many

I have one table that is used to hold all info. Our db is slowing down. Do I really need to break it up? Five years of info that is needed for statistics are in it. If I should break it up into smaller tables, how to go about it and still use this older data in my forms?
