Another option is to use a cube or cylinder that you resize and place in your mountain hole... texture it as water (surface or volume), and you won't have the problem of the infinite water plane. (i used this technique for a multi-leveled fountain)

To make the numbers / background of the clock, i saved 2 bitmaps: one for the numbers/background, one for the mask.
(you just need a black and white or gray levels bitmap to use as a mask for your color bitmap). I use them as a bitmap texture on...

You could save your animation as a bitmap sequence, then use another software to make your GIF animation from the bitmaps... It could take time to do so, but you would have a good control on the result...
And that's the only solution i think of for your problem.
