The mapped drives on my PC (2K Pro onto 2KServer) were showing little red X's and occasionally showing this error when reading or saving files but otherwise behaving normally.
The files would save despite the error.

To get ftp to work you need more than port 21 open. Enabling / disabling the required ports requires knowledge of the firewall being used.

There are a couple of progress programs that may help.
http://www.peg.com/utilities.html suggests probuddy from ZX Systems Inc but ZX was down when I looked (bandwidth exceeded).
I have a copy and it's freely distributable IIRC so reply if you still need help understanding the database structure.
