Did I miss read you cdogg? He's running 98 and the Startup Tab contains some mandatory items in order for Windows to boot.

Uncheck all the unnecessary applications on the Startup Tab.
It sounds like the carrier for the spyware is still installed on the comptr. Do you have any of the following known spyware carriers?
Kazaa, Gator, IMESH, HotBar or other added tool bars, 180Search, Prosearching or other added search vehicles, FunWebProducts, Smileys from Smiley Central, Comet...
That is spyware. Download, update and run AdAware.

If that fails to clear it out go to My Computer, C Drive, Windows Folder/System32 and find WdkC.exe and right click and delete.
You could have some spyware on there, feeding info over the internet connection and using up the resources.

Normal/SafeMode really does not matter when running those spyware removal programs.

I've always called it the I/O core cover. No matter what it called, the mobo should have one to match the mobo in the box. Just pop out the one thats there and pop in the one furnished with the mobo.
Hey thanks micker. I set the Fail Safe Defaults, and then even reset the CMOS jumper.
Its been running great all day. Restarted numerous times and it recognizes the hard drive every time.

Make sure the drivers for the old card have been removed. Check the Device Manager. Also, if it was an integrated video, it must be disabled in the CMOS Setup.

I was having touble getting this comptr to recognize the hard drive. A ran a Diagnostic check and the motherboard has that problem. At least 3 out of the 4 times I ran the check on the motherboard.
How about going to Windows Update and download the OE 6?
Also, just because you go on line does not mean your Email server is up and running. If this only happen occasionally, I would think that could be part of the problem.
However, I would update to OE 6 and see what happens after that.

Notepad is nomally installed with Windows. Try and put the Windows ME CD in the drive, and when it opens choose to Browse This CD. From there choose SETUP.
That should reinstall Windows and its Notepad, but not affect any of the other files or programs.
