i have the same kind of problem. My firewire was working fine for capture and to put back onto tape from premiere. Now all of a sudden the PC does not recogninze my camera when i use the firewire. I also have XP. I think it might be a problem with my camera but i have no idea where to start.

try using different compression methods. What media player are you using to watch the video? Mircosoft DV AVI compressor works good with windows media player.
