P8 is a neccessary part of the p8/p9 system the AT motherboard uses, and if you don't plug in the p8(right next to the p9 back to back black) the computer will not post, and all that will come on are some lights and fans.
If your boot sequence is set to boot to fdd first, than it shouldn't give the hdd a chance to interfere, and you can just format c: /s from a boot disk with format(backup any important files)
