the password is stored in the registry. You can remove the key and that will unlock the console. Don't know the exact key but google will tell you it! Good luck!
I had a similar issue. The error message probably is caused by not being able to start the common framework service. When you click auto update an error message appears about a subsystem failure. What I did was the following ( source KB45575 from the mcafee support website)

epo 3.6 is cluster aware. This is supported by microsoft ( refer to the product guide) . It supports a fail over cluster. You have to put the SQL database on a different server ( not one of the 2 cluster nodes)
virusscan 8.0i and groupshield should be installed together. Although you have to make certain exclusions in virusscan 8.0i to make sure you don't interfere the groupshield process. more info about that can be found on mysupport.nai.com in the knowledgebase.

We have recurring issues with updating several servers. we use ePO 3.5 with the latest patches and agent cma3504. Update settings are configured identically for all servers but on 6 systems ( out of 180 ) the update fails every day. When I check the ePO agent log it looks like this:

Did you configure your updates via UNC path? In that case validation is necessary and updating may fail if clients are not logged on to the network. You can try updates via FTP
