Yes, they are valid and it works on firefox. It was working on IE as well until I added another TD to the table. Discovered it's not just the gifs but anything I add to the body, the menu will disappear partially.

You can drag the page into frontpage and then use the html view to see the source of a page, so if frontpage can do it, I'm sure there are other more impressive ways of doing it.
