Interesting. I have converted to 95 from Version 2 without a problem but have no tried it direct to 97.
Access 97 will read version 2 databases. Perhaps the quickest fix may be to create a blank 97 Database and import all the objects from the version 2 database and recompile. May be worth...
I have noticed the same problem with 2000 and XP. My work around was to use the autoexec macro to close the database window when the database started. Solved all my problems. It may be a solution for you!!

If the query is already saved in your database why are you using ADO at all ??
use a local recordset such as
Dim MyRs as recordset
Set MyRs = Currentdb.openrecordset("Select * FROM .. WHERE... ETC...")
