Thought that I would let the forum know that the fault turned out to be a missing entry in /etc/tcp.smtp. I had to list the IP-number of the choke firewall (the mailserver sits in a DMZ and I was attemping to inject via SMTP from a PC behind the choke.

Have you checked that your POP3-client understands Maildir? Which POP3-client are you using by the way?
