    returning from hibernation, laptop slow/cannot ping gateway

    I got the same problem with Compaq EVOs - in the end I disabled hibernation. Also, when the power is plugged in, which presumably it could easily be if it's attached to the network by cable, I don't turn off the hard disk

    How do I share a modem/internet connection

    I have used a programme called SAPS by Spartacom that works well for sharing modems, but has no security. Spartacom has a demo version that you could probably use (I think www.spartacom.com)
