Thanks to Wolluf for an excellent idea that I thought may be the solution, but alas, still the pics, jpgs and gifs, come up with the message 'file format not found in registry'. This may be misleading as it is in the registry because it works if I log on as a standard user (power user).
Thanks for the idea, JC, but I tried that one first and it didn't open any pics in any format when I log on as the user. If I make the user a power user, it will, but as soon as they return to restricted user status, they can't open picture files. It's obviously a permissions issue, but not one...
