What you're asking is for ID to drop cap an entire word, and there's no way to automatically do that. You'd need to manually adjust the character count for each instance of the drop cap.

Is your printer an RGB device? PostScript or non? Chances are what you're seeing is being caused by the printer's driver. Try selecting all the elements involved in the effect and set them to 99.9% transparency. That will force them all through ID's flattener and may clean up the problem on your...
InCopy, by definition, edits linked files...and the formatting there-in. It sounds to me like what you need is to have your articles linked to an independent XML source, in which case the formatting is independent of the source...and you can use InCopy to edit the XML source files, or a database...
There is no first line option yet (there are a couple technical hurdles to be cleared). The way I do it is to use Forced Line Break for the delimiter and insert that shift+return character manually at the end of the first line.
