How do you share files and printers?

Funny thing is NetBEUI didn't seem to work, and I don't have time to mess around with it. I don't think the printer works for the other computer though... I shared and set it up with drivers already, but I can take care of that myself. Maybe it works and it just wasn't wanting to go the first...

How do you share files and printers?

Okay, thanks again for a helpful link. I was looking for the Advanced Settings part in the properties of the connection, not on the window menu. It's good to know that TCP/IP will be fine because of the router - the whole routable thing was the only reason I tried NetBEUI. And zeons: that...

How do you share files and printers?

Darnit... I was hoping I wouldn't run into any more problems, but I guess they're unavoidable. I configured the Win98 computer for NetBEUI, no problem there, but I couldn't find how you unbind TCP/IP on WinXP from sharing. Also, there's a "NetBIOS setting". Should I put it on default...

How do you share files and printers?

Okay, so check everything in both protocols except for the sharing on the TCP/IP? I don't use Family Login, but I thought someone mentioned to install it. I was just about to take it out anyway because that login window is annoying ^.^

How do you share files and printers?

Okay, one last question: if I want to switch to NetBEUI just for security, what do I do? I installed the protocol on the WinXP computer through the CD. Is there nothing I need to configure? It won't let me access properties. Does it do everything for me? As for on the Win98 computer, do I just...

How do you share files and printers?

I have no idea why it's starting to work now. All the settings are the same. I removed everything (protocols, services) and reinstalled before, and that didn't help the first couple times. I tried to install NetBEUI once, and removed it later. It started to work after I reinstalled everything...

How do you share files and printers?

Okay, finally. I was just messing around what I've been doing this whole time, but the Win98 computer is sharing now. I can see the both computers in Network Neighborhood. I haven't checked the WinXP computer, but I'm sure it's working too. Thanks for all the help guys.

How do you share files and printers?

Oh yeah, If I access the Network Places from my WinXP computer should I be able to see itself in there too in the workgroup? Cause the workgroup is unaccessible.

How do you share files and printers?

Hmm... I doubt I'll go and reformat the computer just for a printer. I will try the reinstallation though. Do I need to do anything special for WinXP to show up in the Network Neighborhood? I have a couple things shared - would they automatically show up?

How do you share files and printers?

Yeah, I made sure that the box was checked. I've edited the HOSTS file on both computers. I can now ping both ways in every way. But still no signs of sharing capabilities from the Win98 computer.

How do you share files and printers?

IP addresses are configured correctly. I have said before that they are unique. All pings work except from XP to 98 hostname. There is no firewall on the Win98 and I've turned off the one on WinXP. The stuff you showed in the pictures was the first thing I did, and yet it doesn't allow sharing...

How do you share files and printers?

Okay, here's the summary about my problem. Everything is as it should be except 2 things: 1) Win98 is not sharing files, cannot see WinXP 2) WinXP cannot ping the Win98 hostname, cannot see Win98 I can live with the first problem for now - the main thing I need right now is printer sharing. What...

How do you share files and printers?

I'm not using a VPN connection. The computers are both hooked up to the same router in the same room. Turns out I can ping both computers on Win98 by hostname, but on WinXP it can only ping itself by hostname. IP addresses still work, and I still haven't had much time to work on them. Thanks...

How do you share files and printers?

Okay, I finally got the Internet back working. I've managed to get the two computers to ping each other by name (changed to many things to pinpoint what actually did it) but I still can't get the "share" option in the folder/file properties. Bugging the heck out of me. I did remove and...

How do you share files and printers?

Bah... don't feel like making a crossover cable - I might end up having to do that eventually. When you refer to "networking components" it's the hardware right? Or do you mean the protocols, software, etc too?

How do you share files and printers?

The whole problem is that it won't let me share folders/files on my Win98 computer. I have some folders and a printer on share from the WinXP computer. As I said, they can ping each other, but the computers don't show up as a network place. The WinXP firewall is disabled, but I'm not sure about...

How do you share files and printers?

Your assumptions are correct. Neither computer has anything show up in network places. The Win98 has "Client for Microsoft Networks" for the Primary Network Logon, and there is a "Logoff" option under the Start menu. And there are no policies disabling file sharing.

How do you share files and printers?

That's the problem - they don't recognize each other. The Win98 starts up fine, has never been networked with another computer before, and sharing is enabled. The two computers can ping each others' IP address, if that bit of info helps at all.

How do you share files and printers?

"File and printer sharing for Microsoft Networks" has been there ever since I can remember. The settings on it are: Browse Master - Auto, and LM Announce - No. I clicked the "File and Print Sharing..." button and checked "I want to be able to give others access to my...

How do you share files and printers?

Okay, I've had all of that done for a while now... but they still can't recognize each other. Names are unique and workgroup is the same. File sharing is enabled on both computers, and the computer with XP has some files and the printer shared. But Win98 isn't showing the option for sharing in...
