The .profile is used by the bourne-shell (and ksh) and .bash_profile is used by the bash-shell (if it is installed on your system). They are located in the homedirectories of users.
Maybe you want to take a look at /etc/profile because that is the system-wide profile that is executed before...
Are you using a microsoft dosprompt ftp-client? Because the data-connection is initiated from the client in passivemode the client has to support this. Ftp in windows95 doesn't as far as I know.
(If you insist on using microsoft ;-) try a ftpclient like wsFTP or bullitproofFTP. I know they work...
In profile-editor, serverproperties, identification, edit you can specify the workgroup. If you set it to "(all)" the servername will be in all workgroups.
I've seen problems with visionfs, UNCpaths and IIS4 virtual directories but have no idea how they can be solved.
