I fixed this problem on an identical machine by changing the PRAM battery after zapping ( Restart and hold down Command-Option-P-R. The computer will restart, continue to hold buttons until the computer has restarted several times.)
had no effect.

Does anyone know a competent hardware technician in Edinburgh, Scotland?
My sister's late G3 iMac has a hard disc problem that software tools fail to solve and I live on the other end of the U.K so cannot help effectively.
Any help gratefully accepted,
Paul.
Changed the battery, reset the PMU ,updated the firmware and stopped using the front button which was faulty and all was well in the end.
Thanks.

Can anyone tell me what the programmer's button does on an iMac 400DVSE? I have read the other similar posts and everything I have tried has made it worse.
The programmer's button was pressed, not by me, at some point and I want to rule that out as a potential snafu.
Thanks,
Paul.
Mosh99,
Do you think failing to do this could have caused the currently irreversable identical problems a similar spec. machine I have is suffering from?
Can you tell me how?
What should I do now?
Paul.
I just had this asked of me and was stumped other than to say "zap the PRAM and rebuild the desktop" but all to no avail.
Is the battery dying methinks? All input appreciated.
Paul.

As the machine is a refurb I am still waiting to hear what it's original DOA fault was, but I bet it was intermittent Hard Drive Problem.
Reseller says "Dead HD, which kind do you want to pay us to replace it with?"
If it's original fault was as I expect then it's me slugging it out...
My friend has a 600 G3 imac and it did the whole Q mark folder trick but when I put Norton on it it couldn't even see another boot OS apart from the Norton Disc.
Same with Mac OS disc.
Apple Hardware Diag gives
Fault: ata 1/7/13 HD : 2,0
This machine isn't even a year old.
Any help appreciated...
