The Resolution-
Even though we have had the same configuration for years, we had to install IMS to get it to send external email.
Why it worked for years without it is another Microsoft mystery.
I would go with Exchange for email. As far as accessing the internal email on the PDA, your cheapest solution would to be putting a docking station for his PDA at his PC so he could syncronize all his email before he left.

Got almost the exact same problem here. Only difference is changing the date on the client did not help. It started on 12/30/3 that we are aware of. We can receive external email but we cannot send it. We are running the same configuration as you.
