Try using a running total field with summary type set to count. Use a formula (Evaluate section of the Create Running Total Field dialog) to specify that the field must equal 1.
Right click on the subreport control on the main report, select change subreport links, select the field in the main report (container report) to link to then select the matching subreport field.
You might try using IdoMillet's suggested formula except set the null field values to a very large numeric. You could then sort on the formula field and, if desired, suppress those records with the assigned large number.
Even simpler, you could try suppressing records where the numeric field...
I'm a 'Dave came lately'. You've probably already solved your problem, but here's a suggestion anyway.
Create your summary report, then create your detail report and insert the summary as a subreport in the detail report header and set new page after property for your detail report header.
